Ways families pay

Private pay

Most families start with savings, a pension, Social Security, or the sale of a home.

Elderly Waiver and other Medical Assistance programs

Does French Meadow Place accept Elderly Waiver (EW) or CADI? If yes: which counties or health plans, is there a private-pay period first, and is there a cap on waiver apartments? Until confirmed, the site says nothing either way.

Minnesota’s Elderly Waiver can pay for care services in assisted living for people 65 and older who qualify for Medical Assistance and need a nursing-home level of care. It does not pay room and board. Our guide explains how Elderly Waiver works in assisted living.

Long-term care insurance

Many policies pay toward assisted living or memory care once a person needs help with two or more daily activities, or has a cognitive impairment. Check your policy for the benefit trigger and the waiting period, and ask the insurer what paperwork they need from the community.

Veterans benefits

Wartime veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for the VA Aid and Attendance pension, which can be used toward assisted living. Your County Veterans Service Officer can help you apply at no cost.

Medicare

Medicare does not pay for assisted living or memory care room, board or personal care. It keeps covering doctor visits, hospital stays, therapy and hospice while someone lives here.

Before you sign anything

Minnesota gives you tools to compare assisted living communities fairly. Use them with us and with everyone else you tour.

  • Ask for the Uniform Disclosure of Assisted Living Services and Amenities. Every licensed assisted living in Minnesota has to give you one. It lists services and what is charged for them.
  • Read the contract for how and when rates can change, and how much notice you get.
  • Look up the license and recent survey results at the Minnesota Department of Health.
  • Read the Minnesota Assisted Living Bill of Rights.

Need from Ron: how often rates are reviewed and how much written notice residents get before an increase. Families ask this on every tour.
